Braces Problems & Quick Solutions

While wearing braces, you may encounter minor issues. Most problems are easily managed at home until your next appointment. Here’s a guide to common braces issues and what to do:

loose-bracket

Loose Bracket

If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the archwire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax if it’s uncomfortable. Do not attach elastics to a loose bracket. If the bracket comes off completely, save it and bring it with you to your appointment. Call our office to schedule a repair.

lost-tie

Lost Tie Wire or Elastic

Tie wires or elastic bands keep brackets secured to the archwire. If one comes loose or is lost, contact our office to determine if an appointment is necessary, and notify our team at your next visit so it can be replaced.

poking-archwire

Poking Archwire

If an archwire is poking the inside of your mouth, apply orthodontic wax or a small piece of wet cotton to the area for relief. Call our office to schedule a visit so the wire can be properly adjusted.

soreness

Soreness from Braces

Mild soreness is normal after braces are placed or adjusted. To ease discomfort, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed.

wire-out-of-tube

Wire Out of the Tube

If the end of an archwire has slipped out of the end tube or a bracket, try to gently place it back with tweezers. For rotated or slid wires, reposition if possible and use wax to reduce irritation. Call our office to schedule a repair if needed.

wax

Sharp or Irritating Areas

Brackets, wires, or ties can sometimes irritate the inside of your mouth. Apply orthodontic wax to cover the sharp area, and call our office if discomfort continues or an adjustment is needed.
