F.A.Q

Why should an orthodontic specialist handle my treatment?

Orthodontic treatment permanently affects your teeth and sometimes your facial structure, so it’s important to have it done correctly. Orthodontic specialists undergo extensive training, allowing them to provide safe, personalized, and effective care for each patient.

When should my child have an orthodontic screening?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends scheduling a screening around age 7. By this age, most children have several permanent teeth, giving the orthodontist enough information to evaluate their bite and development.

Will my teeth naturally straighten as I grow older?

No, they will not. The space for front teeth does not increase with age, and after the permanent molars erupt, available space typically decreases, making professional treatment necessary for alignment.

Is it too late to get braces as an adult?

Not at all! Adults make up a significant portion of orthodontic patients—about 25 percent. Healthy teeth and a confident smile are important at any age, and orthodontic treatment can improve both your oral health and self-esteem.

How long does treatment usually take?

Treatment length varies depending on the individual’s needs. Most patients wear braces for 12 to 30 months, with the average treatment lasting around 22 months.

How often will I need appointments?

Appointments are tailored to each patient. Most patients are seen every 5–10 weeks, but some may require more frequent visits based on their treatment plan.

Can I drop my child off for appointments?

Yes. We understand that schedules can be busy, and you may drop off your child. In some cases, we may ask to speak with a parent afterward, so please check in with the patient manager when dropping off.

Do braces hurt?

Braces generally do not cause pain. After certain adjustments, mild soreness may occur for a few days, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Most visits do not cause any discomfort at all. Remember, “It does not have to hurt to work!”

Can I play sports or musical instruments with braces?

Yes! We recommend wearing a mouthguard for sports. Musicians may need a short adjustment period to get comfortable playing with braces, but it is usually not a problem.

Should I continue seeing my general dentist while in braces?

Absolutely. Regular dental check-ups are important during orthodontic treatment. Your dentist will determine how often you need cleanings while wearing braces.

How often should I brush my teeth with braces?

We recommend brushing at least four times a day—after each meal and before bedtime. We will also teach proper flossing techniques for braces and may suggest special fluoride treatments if needed.

Are there foods I should avoid with braces?

Yes. Certain foods can damage your braces, including ice, hard candies, raw vegetables, and sticky treats like caramel or taffy. Following our food guidelines will help prevent unnecessary repairs and keep your treatment on track.
